The stunning novel set during World War One from Michael Morpurgo, the nation’s favourite storyteller and multi-million copy bestseller.

May, 1915. Alfie and his fisherman father find a girl on an uninhabited island in the Scillies – injured, thirsty, lost… and with absolutely no memory of who she is, or how she came to be there. She can say only one word: Lucy. Where has she come from? Is she a mermaid, the victim of a German U-boat, or even – as some islanders suggest – a German spy…? Only one thing is for sure: she loves music and moonlight, and it is when she listens to the gramophone that the glimmers of the girl she once was begin to appear. WW1 is raging, suspicion and fear are growing, and Alfie and Lucy are ever more under threat. But as we begin to see the story of Merry, a girl boarding a great ship for a perilous journey across the ocean, another melody enters the great symphony – and the music begins to resolve… A beautiful tour de force of family, love, war and forgiveness, this is a major new novel from the author of PRIVATE PEACEFUL – in which what was once lost may sometimes be found, washed up again on the shore…

My favourite character was Lucy Lost ,later known as Merry. This was because she was lost in her head until she saw the German soldier. I could really recommend this book. It is quite a big book and has some emotional moments but I really loved this book.

This was read as a Yr5 class story at school. It is such a big book and although I enjoyed it, I found it tricky to follow when we didn't read it every day. I found that taking the book out of the library helped me to follow it in class when we did read it though.

Kinda good. Loved the fact that it is a true story really quite interesting when you’ve gotten into it. But it gets a little boring after you’ve figured out the plot and just waiting for the characters to find out what you found out half a year ago. But still I’m not saying it’s bad it just gets a little boring that’s all. I recommend this to anyone who likes Michael Morpugo (not the sad bits there aren’t any here).

I loved how Merry finally told the family that she was called Merry and not called Lucy

A bit slow moving and predictable

A mystery book mixed with a lost child who didn’t speak and a war. The Lusitania was a passenger liner that was sunk by a German submarine. Lucy lost as she became known, didn’t speak and Lucy was not her real name and no one knew where she had come from.. read the book to find the answers!

It was a great mystery that unraveled slowly. What puzzled me the most was why the first word she said was “Lucy.” Eventually it resulted in her being called Lucy as they thought that was her name, other than that she didn’t speak. Lucy was actually referring to the Lusitania a ship that was sunk by a German missile. If you are older than about ten it might be a two week reader, although you might need to slow down to piece it all together.

I thought it was one of the best books I’ve ever read. It was factual and what amazes me is that Merry survived after everything that had happened to her. I would defiantly recommend it to someone else because I’m sure that they would like it.

This book is amazing. It is all about a girl Alfie and his Father find on the beach of a nearby island. Starved, dehydrated and with no memory of herself, will Alfie be able to unlock her memories and find out her story... I would recommend it to everybody because this book is heart-warming, fulfilling and comforting. It will help develop empathy and will show people the importance of listening to others because if you do, you may discover there is more to somebody than meets the eye. It is my favourite book by Michel Morpurgo.

I loved this book, my favourite character was Lucy (Merry). I started to price together what had happened, then predicted the end. I loved how narrative it was, and how beautiful the descriptions of the Scilly Isles were (I’m going there this summer because of this book). I’m a BIG Michael Morpurgo fan !

I am not sure whether the story was real or it was made up. One of my favourite part it was when they found a girl that came out of the boat's basement. Unfortunately, in the story, she was a bit poorly and got lost so those who found her decided to adopt her. I loved the happy ending.
