I feel that this book lacked in excitement and was the opposite of unputdownable. Was a very slow and slightly dreary read, possessing few qualities that would make me want to read it again. I have been subdued to reading picture books after the trauma of this story…

I love how it's like our world, but has lots of differences! The idea of finding new worlds ties it in nicely, as it's a different one from us, so they could end up in our world! :)

I thought this book is very exciting and I enjoyed it very much. I liked Lyra the best because she was very adventurous and daring. I would recommend it to 8-12 year olds.

I liked the illustrations because of the detail and it felt real. The best characters were all the daemons because they are cute(not the bad peoples daemons because they were wolves). I would recommend.

To begin with, Lyra Belacqua lives half wild and carefree among the scholars of Jordan College, with her dæmon familiar always by her side. Nevertheless, the arrival fearsome uncle (Lord Asriel – later she finds out that he is not her uncle, but...). He draws her to the heart of a terrible struggle – a struggle born of Gobblers and stolen children. Lyra also finds out hidden secrets about her family and her past and how what she believes is just a mere lie. Slowly, she finds out that both her parents are alive and why they were declared dead. In addition, Lyra also tries to figure out a mysterious substance known as Dust. The Master gives Lyra a gift (alethiometer – which can tell the truth) – will Lyra use it properly and save herself from all the troubles that are waiting for her or will she not be able to understand the symbols and figure out the surreptitious meanings? Can Lyra and her dæmon fight all these problems and can she fulfil her dream of going to see the Northern Lights? Read the book to find out... Rating and Recommendation I really enjoyed reading this graphic novel of such an amazing book – I think the illustrations are really useful in order to understand the feelings and emotions portrayed by the protagonist and the surrounding characters – it gives you a clear meaning of what they might be contemplating about the situation. Due to the illustrations, the author does not need to write how they feel as you can clearly see it. Furthermore, I rate this book 4.3/5, because I love the idea of turning such an original story into a graphic novel – it gives the book a new twist and another way of enjoying it again. I would say that for sheer inventiveness Philip Pullman has no equal and this novel is surely one of his most original idea. Additionally, I think these books are suitable for children over the age of 9 as it involves an equilibrium of emotions and the vocabulary is quite easy to understand.
