It's 1940. Gloria and her little brother have been evacuated to the countryside to get away from the dangers of the Blitz in London. But their new home isn't as friendly as they'd hoped. The woman they're living with, Miss Saunders, is strict, severe and an outcast in the village. And the local children and other evacuees are equally unwelcoming and mocking. But Gloria quickly learns that nothing is ever as it seems in this strange new place. As possible friends turn out to be enemies, and once sworn enemies might be the best possible friends, Gloria finally realizes that believing first impressions could mean missing out on the friendships that can last a lifetime.

I could read this book over and over again. This book is so touching and I really feel for the characters! It’s set in the Second World War and is written in the first person from the perspective of Glory. I would recommend it to 9+ but if you are emotional I would leave it!

This told me about the story of a 12 year old girl and her 6 year old brother. The children had to live in the countryside with a lady called Mrs Saunders because they had been evacuated. Theor next door neighbour died when her Anderson shelter was hit by a bomb. I found this part sad. I do recommend this book as people can see what the war was like.

Once I got into this book it was really enjoyable. It tells the tale of Glory who is evacuated when the Blitz hits home. She goes with Richard her brother who she loves very much. At first she hates it but when she makes friends she doesn't want to leave. Richard is a lovely boy but was a bit jumpy and wary before he left his home but he settles in much quicker than Glory. My favourite character is Auntie Sylvie because she opens up really well when she works some things out. I would definitely recommend this book because it is so moving especially if in school you've been learning about evacuees.

I really love this book, that it's my favourite book in the whole wide world. Although I read it 3 months ago, I remember it more than anything. I like all the characters and the way of the dates. I would like it if someone read it. I loved it so much that I had to read it 4 times and literally hugged it when I was returning it to the library. It's a bit of a sad storie and a bit freaky but awesome all the same. I would love to read it again!

This book is based in 1939-1940 (the second world war). Their mum didn't want them to leave home (especially Richard as he gets very emotional) to the countryside. When a bomb hits Richard and Glory's home and they both receive injuries will they survive much longer?

I think this book was excellent and it kept me wanting to keep on reading. It is a historical story taking place during WW2. In parts it is sad, but there is also hope, meeting new people and making friends. Well worth a read.
