The second book in Philip Pullman’s classic SALLY LOCKHART quartet
in a beautiful new edition to celebrate the 30 year anniversary.

Sally Lockhart is twenty-two, and running her own financial consultancy - a thoroughly modern woman in a world of pompous men – but she’s about to be thrown headlong into a vicious web of murder, mystery and pure evil. When a client’s lost investment appears suspicious, Sally investigates. Soon she is ensnared in a whirl of high-society danger and deceit, which can lead her in only one direction - to the terrifying secret of the Shadow in the North.

This series is so far definitely one of the best I've read. If you like the old Sherlock Holmes stories you'll definitely like this (although it's easier to read and has funny and witty parts). It has a complex mystery with lots of little details - some of which are important, some of which aren't, so watch out! - and it really makes you get the feeling of murky Victorian London... This book is darker than the first book, The Ruby In The Smoke, and I have to warn you... actually I won't warn you, I don't want to spoil it! What I can say is that Sally Lockhart is going to face a terrifyingly powerful company that deals in death... I recommend this to anyone 10+

Before reading this book, I would recommend reading 'The Ruby in the Smoke' by Philip Pullman. It will make this one easier to understand :) In Victorian London, Sally Lockheart bravely defies the rules of society and becomes a financial consultant. Although the job is intended for men, Sally is highly successful - performing better than her two friends, Fred and Jim, could! Soon, however, a business which a client of Sally's has invested in mysteriously collapses and she is thrust into a world of danger, mystery and murder; dragging those closest to her into a perilous journey. They might well succeed - but will it cost them their lives?
