Uprooted - A Canadian War Story
Lynne Reid Banks
From the author of The Indian in the Cupboard and The L-Shaped Room comes a fascinating story of a wartime childhood, heavily influenced by her own experience.
In 1940 as war rages across Europe, ten-year-old Lindy waves goodbye to England and makes the long journey to Saskatoon, Canada, along with her mother and her cousin Cameron. They may be far from the war but they are also far from home and everyone they know and love. Life in Canada is very different but it is also full of exciting new adventures… This captivating story is inspired by Lynne Reid Banks’ own childhood experience and her time in Canada.Reviews

Uprooted is amazing. It was so good at some parts in the story it was hard to tell whether or not it was fiction or non fiction. My favourite character was Lindy as she is my age and rather than being described by her looks, you got to know exactly how she feels from her telling the story. I would recommend this book to older children and adults who like non fiction and war stories as it is set out in such a beautiful way so much so that it seems real. It is very emotional and although some parts are a tiny bit unreal most of the stuff Lynne has put in this book might have happened especially as Lynne was in the war herself.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes action packed books. This story is about two British evacuees (The Canadians called them war-guests as they thought it would be polite to say evacuees) and their mum going off to Canada in the one of the World Wars I can’t remember which one it was because I read it ages ago. XD Going to Canada from Britain is a big change especially how they spoke in their home and how the people spoke In Canada. Like when the girl evacuee started using Canadian slang, her brother and her mother where horrified! And back in those days,British people didn’t have Halloween so they had no clue what it was. Although the evacuees did it and got loads of Sweets (Candy!) they felt guilty about what was happening at home. Won’t tell you anymore read the book yourself!

I found it a realistic story as similar things happened to children during the Second World War. It was exciting.
