The Hero Pup is a heartwarming and uplifting story from Megan Rix, bestselling author of The Great Escape, The Victory Dogs, The Bomber Dog and A Soldier’s Friend.

‘For now Patch is just a Helper Pup,’ Joe said. ‘But one day . . .’
Eleven-year-old Joe is dreading his first Christmas without Dad.

But then Mum suggests they volunteer for Helper Dogs and train puppies to help people in need.
Joe has always wanted a dog and when he meets golden Labrador Patch he knows he’s found him. With Joe’s love and training, can Patch go from playful pupy to heroic helper – and mend Joe’s broken heart along the way?

A classic-in-the-making, Megan Rix takes little-known true stories of animal heroes and turns them into must-have heartwarming stories for 8+ readers, perfect for fans of Michael Morpurgo and Sarah Lean.

Incredibly touching yet immensely practical, Megan Rix combines dog training with a touching story of a boys broken heart. This book shows how hard it is to let go of something you love. A story that always makes me cry. Megan has done it again. The hero pup I would 100% recommend to any dog lover. I dare you to not feel touched.

The descriptions were vivid and it was really heart-warming hearing about a young puppy growing up. My favourite character was Patch the dog

My favourite part is when Joe finally gets a puppy named Patch after his father sadly died when he was a soldier not long ago but Patch makes Joe so much happier when Patch, the Labrador puppy is with him because he is totally attached to him because of the little puppy’s personality and way of doing things. My least favourite part is when Joe has to let Patch go to an assessment to see if he was ready to become a proper Helper Dog but if he passed, Joe wouldn’t be able to keep him anymore because then he would go and stay with his new owner, Sam, who was a soldier who was wounded quite badly. Joe isn’t very excited to be going back to school after his father unfortunately died as a soldier, but when his mum takes him to go and train Patch, a golden retriever puppy who has a brown patch on his ear, to become a Helper Dog to a wounded soldier. Joe is happy to have the puppy and his class love him too. Even, his neighbour who was usually very grumpy, liked Patch. However, when it is time for Patch’s test to see if he was ready to become a Helper Dog just before Christmas, and Joe was dreading that time, because if he passed, Patch would go away and live with his new owner. Joe knew that Patch would pass and he did. In the end, their neighbour actually adopts Patch’s little sister, Little Blue and Joe is super happy.

Hero Pup is an excellent book for more advanced readers, like me myself. most of the time I spent two hours reading the fantastic story-tellings of Megan Rix. As soon as you read about a hero, you can't stop.
