The Little Hen and the Great War
Robyn Belton, Jennifer Beck
A young soldier is fighting in the trenches of wartime France when
he finds a hen, skinny, scruffy, and starving. He tucks her into
his jacket and takes her with him. The other soldiers laugh when
they see him looking after her and sharing his meagre rations of
food, but when the hen thrives and begins to lay eggs for them,
they realise that perhaps survival and hope are possible after all.
A beautiful story of unexpected friendship in the midst of fighting
and devastation.
Reviews
I really liked this book. I can imagine finding a friend in the trenches really distracted you from how horrible it was.

I can think this was a scary time long ago. Having a friend would have made things better.

I read this book for school to learn how animals helped in the war, the hen rewarded the soldier with eggs

This book is about a little hen that got lost and a man named Arthur finds the hen on a tree and named her Bertha.

Loved the hen being safe and new owner at the end

It was exciting, I felt the book was very sad, but then it became happy, which made a nice end to the story. I found the story interesting as it was about World War 1. I would recommend this book to children over 3 years old as it is a bit sad and they might cry.

I have given this a three because the hens apart from Bertha died.

This was a lovely book to read although a little sad, it taught me a bit about the war and difficult it was
