I would defiantly recommend this book to all animal loving children. This book is about a girl called Rachel Farmer, whose parents won't let her have a pet of her own because it is a big responsibility which they feel Rachel isn't yet ready for. Rachel will do anything to show them that she will do her best looking after a pet. During this story Rachel looks after her friend's guinea-pig with the help of Mandy and James, and also volunteers at Animal Ark, the local veterinary surgery in her village. Even though Rachel keeps trying really hard to do her best for the animals she is looking after, thinks keep going wrong. Will she ever show that she can safely look after a pet? When she finds out that guinea-pigs shouldn't be kept in garages due to toxic fumes, she moves the guinea-pigs she is looking after into the boot of an old, un-used car. Sadly she didn't tell her Dad and the car was taken to a scrap yard. After a frantic trip into town, luckily they are able to track down the missing guinea-pigs at a animal rescue centre and take them back home to safety. By the end of the book Mr and Mrs Farmer agree that they can see Rachel really wants a pet of her own and as long as she doesn't do anything silly and always checks what she thinks is the best thing to do with them before doing it, she will be allowed her own pet. During her time looking after her friend's guinea-pig family, she falls in love with the runt of the litter, a little guinea-pig who she called Hero. This is the lucky guinea who ends up becoming Rachel's very own first pet and lives happily ever after with lots of love from his new owner. My favourite person in this book was Mandy Hope, the vets daughter, because even though she could see that Rachel wasn't always doing the best for the animals she could see how much Rachel cared about the animals and wanted to do her best. Instead of moaning, she taught Rachel how to care for the animals and that it is always best to check with a responsible adult before making your own decision. I personally think that this is the right way to approach things, as you can't learn from mistakes without the right help.

This was really funny and cute ,and I love that it shows that people of all ages can look after animals. My favourite character was Rachel Farmer because she was trying to give the animals that were at Animal Ark the best time possible. I would recommend this book for animal lovers and fans of Lucy Daniels.

it was good because Rachel wanted a pet and in the end she retrieved it from the tip when it was about to be hurt.
