The moral of this story is not one that jumps off the page. We see the gingerbread man, who seems to be taunting and bragging about his ability to outrun others. However, this doesn’t last forever because the fox outsmarts him. The moral of this story is that one shouldn’t boast about their abilities, which is definitely a universal theme that can be appreciated by readers of any age. The illustrations in the book consist of colorful and detailed drawings that show the gingerbread man’s journey along the way. They compliment the story by using facial expressions that show the character’s eagerness to catch the gingerbread man. When he meets the fox, the gingerbread man’s face seems a bit apprehensive, which gives clues to the reader that the fox should not be trusted. The fox even has his tongue sticking out of the side of his mouth, again signifying that he is hungry. The illustrations are simple but go along well with the simple story and don’t overpower the moral of the story.
