A new digital reading experience is coming for children and families – keep a record of your reading achievements!
The Summer Reading Challenge is set to become even more interactive, with a new digital platform for children and young people launching in 2027.
Designed to complement the library-based Challenge, the platform will help children stay excited about reading throughout the year. Young readers will be able to create their own avatar, collect digital rewards and choose a “Book Buddy” to encourage them, celebrate milestones and support their reading journey.
Popular features from the existing Summer Reading Challenge website will also be refreshed, including the Book Sorter, digital bookshelf and achievement badges. A simpler sign-up process will make it easier for families to get started.
A new parent and carer portal is also planned. This will allow adults to follow their child’s achievements, receive library updates and access ideas for reading together as a family.
Safety, accessibility and inclusion will be central to the platform’s development. The Reading Agency will work with expert partners and test the experience with children, families and library staff to ensure it is safe, easy to use and appealing to young readers.
Children will also help shape elements of the platform, making sure it reflects what genuinely motivates them to read.
The Summer Reading Challenge will remain firmly rooted in libraries, with the new digital experience designed to make reading even more personal, rewarding and enjoyable – during the summer and beyond.
If you have enjoyed the Summer Reading Challenge website this year and in previous years, please do remember to save your total books read and copy any reviews that you have previously posted that you would like to keep. We will be launching a whole new site and sadly we won’t be able to migrate your child’s account to the new platform so remember to save any information that is on your profile and account this year otherwise it will be archived.
We look forward to the new site launch in 2027 and until then if you have any questions please contact the Summer Reading Challenge team.
