Crafty Times!

One of my favourite things about my job is the freedom to be creative. Of course, when you work in a Children’s Library like we do, it’s important to have our crafty heads on all the time!

You guys are always challenging us to come up with bigger and better things and we love to be challenged!

Mythical Maze is full of all kinds of awesome creatures.

My favourite is Medusa – so this year I am working on perfecting my Medusa Mask craft, which I’ll be presenting to over 30 children over a period of an hour. It might not sound like a lot, but the amount of planning that goes into each craft is HUGE!

For my craft I need over 30 paper plates which I have to paint green with lots of nice messy paint (totally NOT getting it all over the tables. Or carpet. Or chairs…ahem)

Then I need to work out just the right amount of materials needed to complete the rest, making sure that everyone else has enough bits and pieces to do their craft too.

We have to be careful with how much materials we use and make sure that we recycle whenever possible, so we put posters up all over the library from time to time asking for toilet roll tubes, cereal boxes, yoghurt pots and even old socks (clean ones of course!)

We are currently collecting as many toilet rolls as possible – I’m going to need over 90 for my Dancing Dragon craft!

Presenting craft to such a huge amount of people means that we have to make sure it’s suitable for all ages – so something that is easy for little ones to try with the help of an adult, but cool enough that bigger ones will want to get stuck in too. Although that’s not usually a problem – we have plenty of adults who get right into gluing, colouring and cutting too, without any encouragement! Ha ha!

What’s are you looking forward to making over the holidays?
