Are you ready to explore the 'Mythical Maze' with Melanie?
Melanie Waterman, Rickmansworth Library

Hi, my name is Melanie and I work in a really fun library .You can see me in the picture with my wonderful daughters. I am so lucky as my days are spent playing, oh sorry, I mean working with people like you guys. Reading stories at Storytime, running a Chatterbooks group (for young people to meet and discuss books) and leading a teenage reading group which is fast paced with a lot of laughter! I love reading lots of different books. I can’t say I have a favourite author though as I’m always finding new and exciting books from authors I haven’t read before. I’m presently reading again ‘Ottoline at Sea’ by the fabulous illustrator and writer Chris Riddell. It has awesome 3D pictures you can see with it’s own 3D glasses.
We are so EXCITED at our library, getting ready for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge the ‘Mythical Maze’. There will be lots of fun, laughs and marvellous mythical adventures had by all that take part. We are presently putting together some fabulous displays, I will blog again this week with a photo of the displays and tell you all the wonderful things we are doing to get ready.
So let’s begin the countdown there are 12 of days until you can register at your local library and begin this wonderful reading challenge. All you need to do to take part is to read or listen to 6 books over the summer holiday. Just follow my simple rules and not only will you have a good time you will also be part of a fantastic group who really enjoy reading:-
- DON’T PANIC
- Read for pleasure not pain
- Don’t forget you can pick your 6 books from either fiction, non-fiction, talking books,
e-books, picture books – whatever you like to read
- KEEP GOING, DON’T STOP until you have read 6 books
- FINISH the challenge, you will be HAPPY when you receive all your stickers,
a ‘Mythical Maze’ creature zip tag and finally your fabulous certificate along with a
round of applause at the presentation day.
- Try something new! If you normally like scary books, try a funny book! And if you
normally like sci-fi books try a historical book! What about Greek mythical creatures?
OK then let’s get this blog really going, we need to hear from you. I would be so pleased if you sent a message telling us of a great book you have read recently! I also want to hear where you like to read a book. Is it in bed, the garden or even under the kitchen table? I love to read on a train but have to be careful as I have sometimes missed my stop..arghh!!
As you know this year’s theme is ‘Mythical Maze’. Have you read any books about MAGICAL mythical creatures? I think they are so interesting. My favourite is Medusa, I wouldn’t want to be her though – all those snakes for hair is not a good look!! Do you have a favourite character and would you like to be them? Let me know.
If you’re stuck on what book you would like to read next or if you want to know of some great books about mythical creatures just let me know which authors you usually read and I will put my sorting hat on so I can let you know of other books you may enjoy! Just ask me via this blog – I can’t wait to hear from you!
Don’t forget to check back regularly to see what we’ve been up to and for an update on our journey through the Mythical Maze!
Hello Melanie,
I visit your library all the time as you’re very local to where I live. I’ve got a question for you – I’ve just finished reading all the Hunger Games series and I really enjoyed them. Can you suggest something similar for me to read next? Thank you
Hello Mademoiselle Magnolia Vampire….So you were bitten by the first book and had to read the series, I always feel sad when a series comes to an end, but it does leave you free to explore further books and new authors.
I have put my thinking cap on for you. BUT!! must say that we have ‘The Hunger Games’ in our teenage section so some younger people may not be ready to read this series yet. Ok, so have you read TimeRiders by Alex Scarrow a really exciting series, or we have in our childrens section the ‘Heroes of Olympus’ series by Rick Riordan action packed with lots of adventure and mythical characters.
If anyone has read these books perhaps you could write a quick review for us. Or, you may have another book suggestion. Don’t forget you can pop into your local library for help to find books to read next.
Happy Reading Mademoiselle Magnolia Vampire, and come to say Hi to me when your next in our library..Have fun Melanie
