Hi from Lucy
Lucy Castle
My name is Lucy and I work at Jubilee Library in Brighton. I love living and working near the beach. I like going to see the sea at the weekend. Sometimes when I am on the seafront I visit my favourite ice cream shop that has unusual flavours like apple pie.
I am excited to be a Lab Assistant and hear all about what you have been up to for Story Lab so far. What books have you been reading? Have you found a new favourite you think someone else might enjoy? If you have not joined the Summer Reading Challenge yet there is still plenty of time to sign up to Story Lab. Just ask at your local library.
I think it is great that Story Lab is part of the Cultural Olympiad’s London 2012 Festival and I am looking forward to the Olympics starting. Do you have a sport you are looking forward to watching? I want to see the BMX racing. I love riding my bike but maybe not quite as fast as Shanaze Reade. We are getting in a sporty mood here as we have had dancing in the library and we have table tennis tables outside too that anyone can come and play on for free.
We are taking Story Lab to parks across Brighton & Hove over the summer holidays with our friends The Play Service. We will be asking everyone who visits to help us make up lots of stories. Do you like writing stories and creating characters? I like bringing my ideas to life by drawing them and I love books that have inspiring illustrations in.
Have a great summer. Enjoy Story Lab and the imaginative adventures it takes you on.

Hey Lucy. ^-^ Nice to meet you. I love reading books. Its fun and it helps my imagination. It also helped me with this play writting conntest I did at school. I only worked with 1 person cause none wanted to work with me. In the end me and my mate didnt get to the finals. But we had fun. And our friendship was stronger after that. Our play was called Be Loud. The books I have read gave me alot of ideas for the play. We also added hansel and gretal to the play. Well kind of. Just modernised. And mixed with the play. The teacher said I was a great piller of ideas. And I never gave up when we lost our ideas. I read more to get ideas. It was great. Thanx to reading I'm a great play and story writter. Its fun. I like to write horror and action storys. But I also put in some of my life into the story. My feelings. My life influences my storys alot. Dose that happen to you? Do you do that? And do you like horror and actoin books? And do you write plays too? And should I carry on writting storys in my spare time? I love reading The Nothern Lights series By Philip Pullman. Have you read it? If not I recomend it. Its a great series.
Comment by Chief Adolpho Partridge, aged 13+ from Manchester
-
Thank you for your message. It is great to hear all about how your reading has inspired you to write a play. I think lots of authors use a mixture of influences, from other authors work that inspires them to real life experiences, just like you. I do like action books and who knows maybe one day I will be reading one of yours if you keep writing. I certainly think you should keep at it as you seem to be having so much fun with it. I have read and enjoyed Philip Pullman. What are you reading at the moment?

Hello Marge Bonsai
There is still time to start Story Lab as it will be running for the whole of the summer and you can choose whichever books you like which I think will make it fun homework to have. Maybe where you live there might be a mobile library that comes nearby making it easy for you to choose your books or you might even have the option to download eBooks from the library? I would ask your parent or carer to get in touch with your local library to find out what options they might have available. I hope you are able to sign up to Story Lab soon and enjoy the challenge.Reply from Lucy Castle

Hi Lucy,
How are you,i have a few questions about the writing challenge (so prepare yourself)!
1.Does punctuation count as a word?
2.Does a word with an apostrophe count as 2 words (i.e. isn't=2 words)I also have a question about the reading challenge
1.what prizes do you win and how many? (I have read 6 books and have only got 5 prizes)
2.do u get a certificate or medal at the end?
3.If you keep reading books do you win a bag and a hat (A man came to our school and told us that)Thank you
Comment by Professor Tulip Sherbet, aged 10 from Swansea
-
Hello
That is great you are going to enter the writing competition. Good luck. Punctuation does not have to be counted as a word and a word with an apostrophe would count as one word. Do you know which story you will finish?Well done on reading six books and reaching gold. 5 prizes sounds like a lot. What did you receive? I think you should definitely keep reading and you should ask at your local library about the bag and hat as maybe this is something they have planned if they came to your school to tell you all about it.

Hello! It's a shame that your local library is a bit far away and that transport is a problem. Do they have a mobile library at all? Or why not call them and see if there's anything they can do, perhaps they may be able to post you something? Every library is different so they all might have different ways of contacting people who can't get into the library.
I hope this all sorts itself out and make sure you keep reading in the meantime!

Hello Duchess Diamond Flattery - what a lot of questions!
If you enter the writing competition then there are prizes for the winners. There isn't a prize draw for finishing the challenge but why don't you ask at your local library to see if there's anything going on for the summer?
There are stickers at all three levels that you can smell, some of them smell a bit gross so be careful! I smelt a very fishy one the other day!
Some libraries do volunteer work for young people in the summer. That's something you'd have to talk to your library about, and probably wouldn't be for anyone under 16 but check at your own library!

Hello Coach Phoenix Humdinger - what a great name! I love books because they can transport you somewhere else, whether that's a magical land or a different country or even just the thoughts of a different person in the same place as you. I like to read different kinds of books, some with big adventures and some about everyday life.

Hi Lucy,
I always love going to the library. I have to go quite a lot because I'm a really fast reader and I'm always running out of books. I really like doing the summer reading challenges. I do them every year, it's really exiting. I'm always really speedy at it. Did you ever do a summer reading challenge? If you did when? And how long did it take you?
Comment by Mademoiselle Petronella Jellybaby, aged 10 from High Wycombe

Hello! I'm so glad you love going to the library; I love it as well! What kind of books do you borrow from the library?
The Summer Reading Challenge is very exciting isn't it! Unfortunately there was no such thing as a Summer Reading Challenge when I was younger, but every year now I try and read 6 books over the summer as well. I've just finished my 4th book so I'm nearly there already!
What books are you reading this summer?

Hello Countess Flopsy! Thank you for the wonderful comment.
Reading a lot of books as a child was very important; I was reading every single day (and I still do!). I think if you would like to become a writer the best thing you can possibly do is carry on reading and carry on writing. Are you going to enter the writing competition? I think you should!

I've never read a Moshi Monsters book but I think they'd be about adventures; other books about adventures are the Beast Quest series by Adam Blade, Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer, Stig of the Dump by Clive King and the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan. I hope you enjoy some of these!

Comment by Senorita Lacey Pumpernickel, aged 10 from Burgess Hill

Hello! Thank you for your comment - the Rainbow Magic books are very popular! I don't know what the MOST popular one is, but I know that Stella the Star Fairy has been taken out 227 times which is a lot. Perhaps it's because it's got such a shiny, glittery cover and catches childrens' eyes.

Hello Nurse Bunny Bottlenose! One of my favourite books is Matilda by Roald Dahl, and another one is Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer. I like Matilda because she is always reading and knows that reading can take you to a magical place. Artemis Fowl is very good because it's got a lot of adventure in it, it's incredibly funny and I LOVE the faerie world because it is not all wings and pink glitter and squeaky voices - the faeries know how to fight!

Comment by Professor Trigger Colly-Wobbles, aged 10 from southport englannd

Hello Professor Trigger! It is a lot of fun working in a library. We have a lot of events going on. For a while now we have had ping pong tables set up outside our library and so sometimes when I finish work I go and play on them, and the other day we had an event where we decorated ping pong balls!
Our library is very big with a lot of tables, and some people use them to teach other people languages, so it is a lovely thing to be able to walk around our library and hear lots of different languages.
Do you like visiting the library?

Comment by Lady Sunny Custard, aged 10 from London
-
Hello Lady Sunny Custard! Thank you for your lovely long message, I think it will be very useful to anyone reading this who hasn't read The Hunger Games.
As for me, that is one of my favourite books! Rue is one of my favourite characters as well, but I think my overall favourite is Peeta. I think Clove and Cato are both very scary and I wouldn't like to meet them ever!
There are a lot of similar books to The Hunger Games, but we only recommend them for ages 13+ so if you would like to read them, I warn you now you may find them a bit scary! Scott Westerfeld has written a series called Uglies which is very good, and Michael Grant has written a series starting with the book Gone. But my two favourite series' that are similar to The Hunger Games are: The Maze Runner by James Dashner, and Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman. I found some of them quite scary though so maybe someone who looks after you can have a look at it before you read it!

Hello Lady Flopsy, thank you for your message. I love to hear about it when people have recommendations - it is always good to find something new to read. I have only ever read a few chapters of Stormbreaker but I thought it was very good. I think some of them are probably a bit scary; that's why we put some of his books in our 13+ section just in case! But I'm glad they are funny as well.

At the moment,I'm reading Twilight Eclipse by Stephanie Meyer, what are you reading at the moment?
Also, who is your role model and why?Mine is J.K Rowling because ,when times were tough, she didn't give up!
P.S What's the worst book you've ever read?
Comment by Coach Bunny Scratchings, aged 11 from Upholland,UK
-
Hello Coach Bunny Scratchings!
At the moment I am reading a book called Liesl and Po by Lauren Oliver. It is very good and I love it so far! Do you like your book so far?
My role model is an author called John Green because he works so hard to write good books for his readers, and he always takes the time to talk to fans as well. JK Rowling is a good role model to have - I think she is very brave!
A book I didn't like very much was Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, but I think that's because I was quite young when I read it and it was very scary. But I am a wimp so it might not be scary for other people!

Some of the adventure books we recommend here are: Beyond The Deepwoods by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell, Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan, Kensuke's Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo and Inkheart by Cornelia Funke.
You can look up other books on the Book Sorter, which is a link on the red bar at the top of the website. You can put in your age and what kind of books you like, and then you can see recommendations from other children who are doing the Story Lab challenge.

Sometimes, I look up a book I've read recently and enjoyed on the internet and see if anything else comes up that's similar.

Hello Mademoiselle Fandango. It can be very hard to write a book, sometimes it takes authors years and years to write just one book. But ANYONE can write a book, even children! I just read a book that was written by someone who was only 15 years old, and it was really good.
If you want to write a book, I think you should just sit down and write it. Maybe think about your favourite books, and the characters in there. Have you ever wondered what they did after the book ended? Why don't you write that story? Sometimes I wonder what Harry Potter did after he left Hogwarts!

Hello Empress Phoenix. Where did you write your story? I haven't received any comments with a story. And if you pressed 'submit' on your story in the competition section then it should have been sent off. But if you wrote it in a Word (or similar program) document then you have to click 'save'.
I hope that helps. Well done for finishing writing your story - you are a star!!

Hello Lord Cornetto! Do you mean your regular chat messages or your comments on this blog? I'm not sure about your regular chat messages because I'm not in charge of that; maybe you can email the Story Lab team using the 'contact us' button at the bottom of the page. But for the comments on this blog, they appear as soon as I can reply as long as they don't include your last name or your address, because otherwise everyone can see those things and they have to be kept secret on the internet!

Hello Doctor Phoenix, things are very good as it's so sunny here in Brighton! Is it sunny where you are at the moment?
First of all, very well done for entering the competition. It takes a lot of work to write a story, so you must be very dedicated. Well if you've worked really hard on it then really, you've already won the prize of being proud of a piece of writing you've done. I know that when I finish writing a story I am always so pleased that I have finished it, and sometimes it doesn't matter what happens after that.
Our judges will decide who wins the big prizes in September. Try not to think about it if you're nervous, and remember it's all for fun! Why don't you try writing something else in the meantime to distract yourself?

Dear Lucy,
I really love reading books. Especially fact books I really like the horrible histories' books because I love learning as well as reading. Have you read a Diary Of a Wimpy Kid Books by Jeff Kinney?
Comment by Captain Diamond Flattery, aged 9 from hemel hempstead, England
-
Hello Captain Diamond! I really love reading books as well. Learning and reading at the same time is a lot of fun isn't it? The Horrible Histories books are some of my favourite ways to learn about history and science (with the Horrible Science book as well).
I haven't read the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series but I have heard that they are very good. Have you read them? Which one is your favourite one? It can be fun to see the books we love turned into films.

It's a shame you can't spend more time at the library, perhaps your mum is very busy! If you only have five minutes, have a look for any displays or ask a member of library staff to recommend you some books based on what you like. Why not see if you can reserve books online so you can pick them up straight away when you visit?

Well done for being on your fifth book! What do you think your sixth one is going to be? I think you can get out books that are whatever length you want.
It's great that your library is having an award ceremony; are you looking forward to it? I'm glad you've done the Summer Reading Challenge the last two years. Space Hop was my favourite because we got to make spaceships out of recycled material! Which one is your favourite so far?

Hello Prince Gonzo, well done for earning your bronze set of stickers! Have you found the code on them that you can enter into the website? Are you working towards your silver stickers now?
Smurf ice cream sounds very odd, what did it taste like? Was it blue?

hi lucy if you read only 5 books do you still get a gold medal
Comment by Queen Boadicea Scratchings, aged 10 from london
-
I think reading 5 books is a great achievement. If you get this far you have done very well and hopefully collected some rewards like stickers along the way. Did you know some of the stickers are smelly? To complete the challenge and get the gold you have to make it to 6 books, so just that one more to get there and get the medal. Do you think you can make it to 6?

Hello! To get a code you need to read at least two books so you can get a set of stickers from your library - the code is on the stickers. When you put the code in you get all sorts of fun things like new animations! At the end of Story Lab you will get a certificate and maybe even a medal that you can show all your friends. Any child can join Story Lab, how old is your little brother?

Hi its me again Chelsea. In September 2012, I will be in Year 7 and I am extremely scared how it will be there. Can you give me some tips to make me feel better? And by the way, my favourite sport is Cricket. What´s yours?
Comment by Queen Phoenix Flattery, aged 11 from London
-
Hello Queen Phoenix Flattery
I think it is ok to be scared when you are starting something new like Year 7 and that actually some of the other children starting Year 7 will be scared too. Teachers are there to help you settle in, so ask them if you have questions.
Moving to secondary school is a chance to make more friends, find new subjects and clubs you like, and have fun. You might get to play cricket at your new school. I played hockey when I was at school.

Hi Lucy!
I am Chelsea and I went to the Brighton Beach once but I live in Slough. It was extremely nice. Did you go to the Beach? And also my favourite author is Francessca Simon. I just love her Horrid Henry books. Who is your favourite author? Although I am 11 years old, I love a book called Elephant Wellyphant, which is very babyish. Do you like any baby books? Furthermore, even I am looking forward to the Olympics! BYE!
Comment by Queen Phoenix Flattery, aged 11 from London
-
Hello Queen Phoenix Flattery
That is great you visited Brighton and enjoyed it here. It has been lovely and sunny here all day so a good day to visit the beach. Horrid Henry is very popular at Jubilee Library.I think books like Elephant Wellyphant are great whatever age you are and you should keep reading all the books you love. I like that one too. Have you seen Octopus Socktopus? That is a good one too. I love lots of picture books including I will not ever never eat a tomato by Lauren Child. I think the descriptions for the food like cloud fluff are great.

Hi Lucy
I was wondering if for the Finish the Story competition if you can write up to 500 words yourself or can it be up to 500 words including the 100 words started of by the author
it would be a great help to know
thanx
Comment by Senorita Jet Windchime, aged 12 from london
-
Hello Senorita
That's great you are thinking of having a go at the Finish The Story competition. I think you can write 500 words of your own not including the 100 words the author has written. Do you know which authors story you are going to use yet?
Good luckReply from Lucy Castle

what is the funist thing working in the libery
Comment by Officer Marge Frankenstein, aged 9 from jersey

Hello Marge
I like meeting all the people who come in to use the library and love it like I do. I also like introducing people to the library who have never been before and seeing them get excited about all the great things on offer. I also like getting involved in all the events we do. It was great fun when we had dancing in the library the other day. This week we have Spanish and French Storytime and also decorating ping pong balls so I think that will be fun. What is the most enjoyable thing about the library you go to?Reply from Lucy Castle

at home , in my bed room! I am a massive nerd is there any doctor who books to recommend or anthing along sifi! thank you .
Comment by Lady Morgana Paddington, aged 12 from Southampton
-
That's great! I am a nerd as well, I think it's great to love reading and to love learning. I don't know about any particular Doctor Who books but I'm sure you could get some from your library if you ask at the desk. For other sci-fi, I have heard that the Ender's Game series by Orson Scott Card is very good, and James Patterson has a series called Maximum Ride. If you're interested in fantasy, my favourite fantasy series is Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer.
Why not try the Book Sorter to help you find others?

can you read books at home! I want to read harry potter and the philosopher's stone,am i allowed!
Comment by Lady Morgana Paddington, aged 12 from Southampton
-
Hello Lady Morgana! It's great that you want to read the first Harry Potter book. If you got it from your library then you can read it wherever you want - at home, on the bus, in the park, anywhere! If you want to read a book for Story Lab then you can read it anywhere as long as it's FROM your library, so books you already own don't count.
Where is your favourite place to read a book? I think mine is in my big bean bag cuddled up with my dog.

Hi! I just read one of story lab leaflets today and it says that story lab is for children aged 0-15 does that mean that a newborn baby can participate in the reading challenge lol!!!
Comment by Baroness Iggy Desperado, aged 13+ from Leicester
-
Hello! It's great you're reading the leaflets about Story Lab. Any child can join in with the fun of Story Lab. Here in Brighton we have a separate challenge for children aged 0-4 where they get stickers every time they take books out of the library. So yes, a newborn baby can participate in the challenge, although different libraries may do this differently! Are you taking part this year?

Comment by Baroness Aspidistra Squirrel, aged 10 from Peterborough

Hello! I think if you would like to be an author then you should write, write, write! Why not use the Story Lab writing competition as a starting point? Lots of different authors have started a story that they want you to finish.
Here in Brighton we are picking our favourite words from the stories we have read during Story Lab. Do you have some favourite words that you could use to help start a story?
